rules

○ Don't be a dick. If you are making the OOC atmosphere of the game toxic for fellow players or the moderator, there will be consequences. This includes all the standard accepted rules of roleplay: don't infomod or godmode, keep IC separate from OOC, don't fourth-wall without permission, stay in character, and don't try to hog the spotlight all the time. All offenses will be handled on a case-by-case basis, as no two situations are the same. The mod reserves the right to issue warnings or remove players from the game, depending how serious the offense is, and to refuse applications or reserves based on a strongly demonstrated history of toxic behavior.

In cases of complaints about current or prospective players, mod policy is to request proof to support the complaint. If a complaint is acted on, no details about the player who lodged the complaint will be given; similarly, no details about the actual complaint will be given if those details will make it obvious who complained.

procedures

○ The communities are: thequarantine for network posting, thequarantinelogs for in-person interactions, and thequarantineooc for OOC interactions. thequaranmeme is the community where memes, including test drive memes, will be posted. Tagging on these communities should be done in the form of "canon name: character name" and players are responsible for their own tagging.

joining the game

○ The monthly test drive memes are considered game canon and will generally serve as a ramp-up or introduction to the next event mod-posted mingle. Current players are welcome to post top-levels on the TDM posts, or to use prompts from the TDM in posts done on any of the game communities. All events listed in prompts on the TDM are game canon, and any threads with characters on the TDM that don't end up being applied for and accepted in the game can still be considered game canon, but that thread would have occurred in a dream.

○ Reserves will be open from 9:00 PM PST on the 15th of the month until 9:00 PM PST on the 1st of the month, when applications open; reserves will be valid until 9:00 PM PST on the 7th of the month, when the application cycle closes and the reserves page will be cleared.

○ Applications will be open from 9:00 PM PST on the 1st of the month until 9:00 PM PST on the 7th of the month. Application challenges are not currently an option, though applications may be submitted for a reserved character in case the reserver doesn't follow through or is declined.

○ Character cap is set at 3 per person. There will be an overall game character cap of 100 characters to start. There will be a cast cap of 10% of the game per canon (ie. 10 characters per canon at game outset). Any of these caps may be re-evaluated as needed, and a notification from the mod account will be posted if they do change. If these caps are reached, additional applications will be queued and processed as space becomes available.

○ Appable characters include fandom characters or original characters, either fresh from canon or CRAU, providing the character has not been removed from their canon for more than three years. Characters should have sufficient released information in English (or translated to English) to form a personality that is less than half headcanon, and be from a canon that has been released for a month or more at the time of application. Characters who are dead in canon can be applied for without restriction. Characters created for D&D campaigns are considered original characters.

○ Non-appable characters include fandom-based original characters, AU versions of characters that are not supported by canon, duplicates (including from different versions of a canon) and characters so minor that a case cannot be made for their personality without large amounts of headcanon. Player-created characters from MMORPGs like World of Warcraft are considered fandom-based original characters; NPCs from MMORPGs would be considered canon characters and would need to meet the criteria for canon characters.

○ Characters appable on a case-by-case basis include canon AU characters, malleable protagonists from RPG games or dating sims, and non-humanoid characters. Malleable protagonists from games like Mass Effect or Dragon Age are appable, providing they are applied with a solid and consistent personality that matches what is presented in the game. If you wish to apply for a non-humanoid character who would need special accommodations due to size or other variables, please contact the moderator before applying to discuss options. Characters with CRAU from locked games will also be accepted on a case-by-case basis, as an exception to the rule about application samples needing to be from unlocked sources; in the case of CRAU from locked games, samples can be provided as screencaps or pastebins, and must include a screencap showing permission from the other player involved in the thread.

activity check

○ Activity check will be constantly open. Each player will have a thread on the Activity Check entry, where they may submit their required activity as soon as they have completed it, at any time between the first and last day of every month. A warning/reminder post will go up listing the names of any player who has not submitted an activity proof by 9:00 PM on the second-to-last day of the month. All comments used as activity proofs must be timestamped between the first and last days of the month, per the game's PST time zone.

Acceptable activity proofs should be one of the following:

○ One thread of 10 or more texting comments (must contain 10 comments from your character).

OR:

○ One thread of 5 or more substantial prose/action bracket comments (must contain 5 comments from your character).

These are judged by the content of the post rather than the community it's posted to (for example, an action thread on a network entry would still count as prose).

○All activity proofs can be from either thequarantine or thequarantinelogs, monthly Test Drive Memes, or from mod-posted memes that are marked as game-canon and AC acceptable; threads from character IC inboxes are not acceptable as activity proofs. If a player doesn't have enough applicable proof of activity, they may post to the Activity Check post with a request for a strike. There is no option for two strikes in a row, so proof must be posted the next month or the character will be swept.

○ Newly accepted characters will not have to provide activity proofs for their first month. They will, however, be required to provide a link to their responses to the various housekeeping entries linked in their application acceptance comment.

○ Patterns of poor AC compliance such as taking a strike every second month, chaining hiatuses and strikes, or providing activity proofs with only one other character or player for an extended period of time will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, as will any extenuating circumstances that may cause a player to struggle with AC.

○ Hiatuses of longer than 14 days will exempt the player from activity check; in the case of hiatuses that span from one month to the next, the player may choose which of the two months' activity checks to be exempt from.

abilities, content & miscellaneous game mechanics

○ Character abilities will not be nerfed unless they involve interdimensional travel or use of interdimensional spaces, or are otherwise gamebreaking. For CRAU characters who gained an ability or whose ability was altered in a previous game, it is up to player choice whether they want to restore the character's canon ability (or lack thereof) or keep the new/altered ability, but only one can be chosen.

○ Universal translation is provided by a lingering translation spell that is still mostly functional and spans the entire settlement area and the portal. The magic is, however, very old and has a habit of failing at times, which can result in communication barriers for people speaking different languages. Moving outside the settlement into the jungle will take characters out of the range of the spell. This will be upgraded as characters improve the setting.

○ Network communication is currently only available via hand-held walkie-talkie radios. Currently only audio posts are available and there is no function for privacy. Each character is identified by a character-chosen username. See the Arrival page for more in-depth information on the radios. This will be upgraded as characters improve the setting.

○ The Quarantine is sex-positive, however non-consensual sex should not be played in the game - either on the main or meme communities or in any entry linked on the Taken Characters page, including IC inboxes. In the case of adult prompts, any mechanics included in these posts are intended to facilitate consensual sex, not to encourage sexual assault, or to 'trick' characters into having sex that they would not normally have.

○ Young or teen characters are allowed in The Quarantine. Characters under 18 may not be involved in detailed sexual logs on the main or meme communities or in any entry linked on the Taken Characters page. Obviously, making out and other romantic content is fine, as is fade to black for older teens, but sexual content with minors will not be allowed in-game.

○ Use content warnings for anything that other players may want to avoid - this is including but not limited to: drug use, sexual content, taboo romantic/sexual situations (eg. incest, exploitation, extreme age gap), drug and alcohol use, mental health issues (eg. suicidal ideation, dementia, et cetera.), and anything similar. Please use common sense for this, and if you have any questions or concerns, contact the mod for mediation.

○ Character deaths are non-permanent, and characters who die will be revived by being dreamed back into life by the Portal. With each death, the dream will degrade, and after the second death, physical and/or psychological consequences may be incurred. If your character has died twice, please contact the mod to work out consequences that would be enjoyable for you to play.

○ Dropped characters simply disappear. Details on what happens to them may become available through plot progression.

○ Canon updates can happen at any time and there is no need for mod approval. When a character canon updates, they will enter a personal dreamscape with the Portal, and will experience everything they have missed from canon, including any physical alterations or power changes.

important dates & monthly routine

○ Monthly Routine: The Quarantine will operate on a three-month rotation of different types of events and plots, both to provide variety and to touch on different aspects of the game premise. The rotation will go in the following order:

○ Survival/Plot: A survival/plot month will contain a TDM and mingle based around survival in the setting, or a major metaplot element. These months will also have a list of 'mission prompts' that players can use to thread and gain resources that characters may need, such as supplies or more housing or power. Mission prompts will be claimed on a first-come-first-served basis, and will be very basic - for players who wish to use mission prompts but aren't comfortable with basics, the mod will provide more in-depth details by PM, just ask! Applications will be open as usual during these months.

○ Dreamscape: A dreamscape month will feature a TDM and mingle based around the portal pulling characters at random into her dreams, which will function effectively as a dreamshare or memory share event, while the rest of the setting will be relatively normal. Each dreamscape will have a different theme, and they are totally opt-in on an OOC level, while characters may be pulled in unwillingly ICly. Applications will be open as usual during these months.

○ Portal Stabilization: A portal stabilization month will feature a TDM and mingle based around the portal settling into a stable connection with another world for the duration of the month. During these months, characters can safely travel back and forth through the portal to this other world, in order to gather supplies and explore the alternate setting. Applications will NOT be open during these months, as the portal will be permanently open to one location, and to allow the mod extra time to direct players through a completely alternate setting.

○ Important Dates: While these will also be listed on the Calendar, please find below a quick rundown of important dates to take note of each month. All opening and closing times, as well as posting times, will be at 9:00 PM PST. If the time or date is changing, it will be announced on the mod plurk.

○ Applications: On months that applications are open, they will open on the 1st of each month and close on the 7th of each month.
○ Mod-Posted Mingles: Open mingles posted by the mod account will go up on the 1st of each month, whether or not applications are open, and will include an explanation of the month's event and several writing prompts.
○ Reserves: On months that precede open applications, reserves will be open from the 15th of each month until the last day of each month. Reserves will be swept clean on the 8th of each month after applications close.
○ CR Memes: A CR meme will be posted on the 15th of each month.
○ Test Drive Memes: On months that precede open applications, a test drive meme will be posted on the 20th of each month.
○ Activity Check: With the permanent activity check post, AC can be submitted by any player at any point between the first and last day of the month. An activity warning post will be put up by the mod on the second-to-last day of each month as a reminder to anyone who has not yet turned in AC.
