character experience
Characters who arrive in The Quarantine will do so during a time where they feel displaced, lonely, or like they don't belong - no matter how long-lived or fleeting that moment was, that is when the portal will find them and draw them to her. In the blink of an eye and between steps, the character will find themselves taking their next step out of the glowing blue of the portal, right onto the top of a shallow set of steps naturally created by striations in the shale of the ground. Unless they're pretty graceful, this might result in a bit of a tumble.
Upon arriving, characters will be carrying only whatever items and clothing they had on them at the moment they were brought here, as well as any bags they were carrying. This includes any small pets or companion animals smaller than a horse. They will also emerge from the portal feeling exhausted and hungry, as if they'd been walking all day with nothing to eat, despite however rested and fed they were before they left.
Any life-threatening injuries will be magically healed in transit to the point it won't kill the character, but any smaller injuries will be left as they are. Communicable diseases will be magically rendered inert by the trip through the portal. If your character has an exceptional circumstance, please swing by the Rules & Procedures page to discuss it with the mod.
○○ The Portal & Arrival Area: This is where characters will arrive in the game. Glowing a vibrant blue, the portal is enclosed in a ring of what looks like intricately carved bone, with thick strings of almost ectoplasmic blue matter that has fused with the stone and plants around it. Touching these strings will give characters a small unpleasant shock, as they are part of the portal's nervous system and very sensitive. The portal is located at the top of a small hillock with layered slate that forms something like steps, and from the base of this hill, a well-worn path winds off into the jungle in the direction of the settlement. The path is partially and crudely paved with stones set into the ground, and the walk to the settlement will take around 15 minutes. A reference image of the portal and arrival area can be found here.
○○ Network devices can be found in a large heavy-duty metal box near the base of the slate hill. The box has had the lock smashed off and inside, characters will find futuristic but beat up solar powered walkie-talkie radios for long-distance communication. Once one of the devices is powered up, it will prompt for a username to identify and lock it to the user. While the symbols on the device are completely alien, characters will be able to understand the language through the universal translation mechanic.
The radios have an average range of 3 kilometers in the forest, with a maximum range of 5 kilometers without interference. They are capable of only audio transmissions, and have no ability to communicate privately, though multiple people may converse at the same time on the same frequency. For the sake of player sanity, we can assume that each thread on a network entry is happening individually, but can be heard by other characters. This would make threadjacking possible, but 'scrolling back' through the network impossible, as the audio posts are broadcast one time only.
A reference image for what the radios look like can be found here.
